Data collection was performed by means of structured interviews and then submitted to descriptive analysis. Results revealed inadequacies related to a late onset of prenatal care, few ultrasounds performed and poor participation in educational activities. The Takeda-modified Kessner index indicated the prenatal care had a low adequacy level (35%). There is a need to promote health interventions to improve the rates pregnant women who make an early start in prenatal care and monitor the compliance to the recommended health care protocols to ensure safe health care practice during pregnancy, delivery and puerperium.
