Civilian Theatre Provision in the War Zones

The inclusion of theatre entertainment by civilians in the war zones of Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East initially augmented, then greatly enhanced, the theatrical fare on offer to the troops. The structure of this entertainment can loosely be divided into three categories: tours by individuals; one-off performances and short tours by independent companies; and tours organized by Lena Ashwell — the actress and former proprietor of the Kingsway Theatre.
