This thesis analyses the politics of these civil servant unions in relation to women, explores the role of women in shaping the processes that drive these politics and considers the underlying reasons that prompt women to choose membership of one organisation over the other. Furthermore, it examines the influence of the trade unions on women's lives and thinking. In this context, the class position of civil servants, the effect of gender roles on the labour market and on women’s employment and the ideological and political moulding of women members of civil servant unions are analysed through a review of the literature on class, trade union publications and the discourses in which they engage as well as the narratives of women themselves.
