Classification of Pelvic Ring Injuries

2021
Classification systems should facilitate communication between physicians and assist documentation and research. They should also have prognostic value for patients and assist during planning of treatment. According to Maurice Muller, the severity of the osteoligamentous injury is the primary focus. The additional soft tissue injury is of major importance. Therefore, additional classifications of prognostic relevance presented include the posterior pelvic ring, lesions of the lumbosacral region including the sacrum and lumbopelvic dissociation injuries, complex pelvic trauma, open pelvic fracture classifications, and a classification integrating the hemodynamic status resulting in an emergency treatment concept.
