Cardiovascular Actions of Magnesium

Magnesium modulates the function of several cardiac ion channels and these effects may have important clinical consequences. In this article, the effects of extracellular and intracellular magnesium concentration on myocardial cell channels and the potential pathophysiologic significance of these changes during magnesium depletion and myocardial ischemia are discussed. The current understanding of hypomagnesemia and magnesium therapy in cardiovascular disease is also reviewed.
