Geoinformation monitoring of the ecological state of the arctic territories

2018
The challenges for the arctic ecosystems of Russia are due to the weak regeneration capacity of natural components against the backdrop of an ever-increasing technogenic burden of the oil-producing industry, frequent failures at the oil- and gas-pipelines, drilling rigs and plants, emission of industrial wastes into the atmosphere and discharge of waste waters into the rivers and seas. The present-day technical facilities for remote sensing of the Earth’s shells allow obtaining digital images of practically all sites of the Earth’s surface at a high spatial resolution and in a wide range of the electromagnetic wave spectrum. The tasks of geoinformation monitoring of the arctic territories are urgent. The purpose of this study is to develop the principles and mechanisms of geoinformation ecological monitoring of oil-producing arctic territories based on the example of Kolguyev Island, using the GIS-technologies and Landsat-8 imagery.
