Rational thought has a-rational roots; the Latin term for these archaic principles is « ingenium » - the basis of invention, of, according to Aristotle, induction, and of rhetoric discourse. The tradition of a rationality inseparable from a rhetoric was continued by the Renaissance mannerists, and needs to be taken up and understood today.
