Agents affecting bone metabolism comprise a heterogeneous group of drugs, including vitamin D analogs, bisphosphonates Russell (2007) , calcitonin, plicamycin (mithramycin), estrogens and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), synthetic parathyroid hormone fragments, for example, teriparatide, strontium ranelate and the RANKL inhibitor denosumab. Many of these are used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, Paget's disease, the hypercalcemia of malignancy and in the reducing bone damage in advanced malignancies involving bone.
