Chemotherapeutic Response of 3-Methylcholanthrene-Induced Mammary Carcinoma in Wistar Rats to 51 Agents

1967
Fifty-one chemical agents were tested for antitumor activity against mammary carcinoma induced by gastric instillations of 3-methylcholanthrene (NSC-21970) in female Wistar rats. Eight agents were active, that is, the tumor weight of treated animals at 42 days was less than 50% of the tumor weight in untreated controls (T/C < 0.5), without significant mortality or body weight loss in the treated animals. These agents were: colchicine (NSC-757); 4,4′-(1,2-diethylethylene)diphenyl hexestrol (NSC-9894); 17-hydroxy-6α-methylpregn-4-ene-3,20-dione acetate (NSC-26386); 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (NSC-38297); 1-β-d-arabinofuranosylcytosine, monohydrochloride (NSC-63878); 6β-(dimethylamino)-3β, 5-dihydroxy-5-pregnan-20-one (NSC-73862), 1-adamantine hydrochloride (NSC-83653); and 1,4-dimethyl-1,4-diphenyl-2-tetrazene (NSC-83799).
