Growth Induced Anisotropy of Y3−xLuxFe5O12: Dependence on Temperature and Composition

2008
We have measured the uniaxial growth‐induced anisotropy in the growth plane of samples cut from the (110) facets of Y3−xLuxFe5O12 with 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 2.7, from 4K to 450K. Neither rare earth ion is magnetic. We find that at 77K and above the induced anisotropy can be roughly described by Ku ∼ K (1−x/3) x with K ∼ 8×103 ergs/cc at 300K. At 4K, Ku shows no regular dependence on x and the measured anisotropy at this temperature can reasonably be attributed to rare earth impurities. The temperature dependence of K indicates that the value of K is proportional to ma3, where ma is the reduced magnetization of the octahedral sublattice.
