Effects of bisphenol A on the dynamic changes of primordial follicle pool: mechanism research progress

2017
Primordial follicle is the basic reproductive unit of women, also the only reservation form for oocyte. If the generated number of primordial follicles are insufficient, or being excessively, prematurely activated or follicular atresia occured, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) may occur. The causes of POI are many and complicated, and the effects of environmental endocrine disruptors (EED) on POI and other diseases of female reproductive system have attracted attention of researchers. Bisphenol A, one of typical EED, has weak estrogenic activity. Accumulating evidence has suggested that bisphenol A has effects on the dynamics of primordial follicle pool. In this article, we review the latest research progress of the mechanism of bisphenol A effects on the dynamics of primordial follicle pool, to provide theoretical basis for prevention and treatment of POI and other diseases of female reproductive system. Key words: Endocrine disruptors; Ovarian follicle; Oogonia; Premature ovarian insufficiency; Bisphenol A; Female
