Acute Stenting During Acute Ischemic Stroke

Failed recanalization may be seen in up to one-fourth of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) cases despite new devices and rapidly advancing endovascular technology. Stenting during acute ischemic stroke is considered by neurointerventionalists as salvage therapy after unsuccessful thrombectomy attempts due to refractory vessel occlusion. While stenting carries the promise of immediate flow restoration, there are associated risks including hemorrhage, reocclusion with progressive ischemia, vessel injury/dissection, and others. The evolution and applications of intracranial and extracranial stenting and review of literature including various stent types are discussed in this chapter.
