Addition salts of azithromycin and citric acid and process for their preparation. Such addition salts have a molar ratio of azithromycin and citric acid such that provides a pH in an aqueous 10%, between 4.0 and 8.0. The process for preparing said salts comprising: a) dissolving azithromycin in a solvent or solvent mixture, b) adding citric acid ,; c) isolating the product obtained by crystallization salt. Addition salts of azithromycin and citric acid are stable and soluble in aqueous medium, being useful antibacterial and antiprotozoal agents.
