Antibiogram of bacteria isolated from dogs suffering from otitis externa

This study was conducted to isolate the bacterial organisms associated with otitis externa in dogs and to determine their antibiogram. Paired ear swab samples were collected from 56 dogs suffering from clinical signs of itching, head shaking, off smelling odour from ear, unilateral or bilateral otorrhoea, etc., which are indicative of otitis externa. On cultural examination, 47 swabs were found positive for bacterial infection with 61.70% samples showing mono-infection, whereas mixed infection was observed in 38.29% samples. A total of 65 bacterial isolates were recovered with maximum frequency of Staphylococcus spp. (53.84%) followed by Streptococcus spp. (18.46%), Pseudomonas spp. (12.30%), Proteus spp. (7.69%), Escherichia coli (6.15%). Least isolated organism was Corynebacterium spp. (1.53%). Irrespective of the isolated organisms, the overall antibiogram pattern revealed sensitivity towards various antibiotics in the range of 31.25–74.35%. Amongst 19 tested antibiotics, Cefoperazone was found to be most sensitive whereas Septran to be least sensitive antibiotic.
