A software defined radio based power saving strategy for next generation mobile systems

2018
Mobile devices are on the way to be a necessity for the users, and the coming 10 years are expected to see a rapid uptake of the number of these devices. Accordingly, network capacities and features must be increased and enhanced to accommodate this increase. Another major challenge that will face the next generation mobile networks will be the amount of power consumed to serve this increasing number of devices. This paper presents a power saving technique that is based on enforcing sleeping mode on base station transceivers. The sleep mode technique has been implemented on a National Instrument (NI) software defined radio (SDR)-device. Experimental results confirm the benefits of the proposed power saving mechanism.
