PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To search for new medicinal applications of buformin or phenformin or a salt thereof. SOLUTION: Buformin, phenformin or a salt thereof is useful as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for age-related macular degeneration because it exhibits excellent vascularization inhibitory action in the choroid and also suppresses photoreceptor cell death by optical disorder.
