Advanced monitoring and modelling methods for power transformer asset management

In the last few years, there have been major research and development efforts aimed at optimizing the use of the existing power transformers on Hydro-Quebec's grid. This paper presents recent Hydro-Quebec achievements in the development and application of new diagnostic techniques to assess the condition of transformer components such as insulating paper, tap changers and bushings. Significant results are also shown on advanced thermal modelling of transformers and the numerical simulation methodology used for estimating the effect of transformer faults on the equipment's mechanical integrity.
