Effect of Collagen Membrane Fixation in Guided Bone Regeneration

2010
Objective:To observe the effect of bone regeneration with Bio-Oss guided by bioresorbable collagen membrane fixation. Methods:Four adult beagle dogs were used in the study.Three bone wounds(1 cm × 1 cm,each) were created on bilateral buccal surface of the mandible in every dog.The 3 wounds at the same side of mandible in the same dog, were randomly distributed into three groups to be treated with different methods.Group A was only capped with Bio-Oss.Group B was treated with Bio-Oss + collagen membrane + titanium screws fixation.Group C was treated with Bio-Oss + collagen membrane(without fixation). The macroscopic, histological and scanning electron microscope examinations were checked at twelve weeks after surgery.Percentage of new bone regeneration was measured. Results:New bone formation was revealed in all three treatment groups.Group A:massive cartilaginous ossification and irregular bone trabeculae were found.Group B:mature new bone, regular trabeculae arrangement and Haversian system.Group C:a great number of osteoblasts and bone lacunae, osteocyte maturity was higher than those in group A.Conclusion:Bio-Oss combining with collagen membrane fixation may be better for guided bone regeneration.
