Sonographic demonstration of duodenal obstruction with midgut volvulus

1984
Duodenal obstruction in midgut volvulus is well known and can be demonstrated either with air in the stomach and duodenum or with a barium upper gastrointestinal series [1, 2]. Recently, there has been a tendency to use sonography in the investigation of upper gastrointestinal obstructions in infants; although primarily it is centered around pyloric stenosis [3-5], other entities are discovered from time to time. In this regard, we recently encountered three patients with midgut volvulus and duodenal obstruction where sonography was the first method to detect the abnormality.
