It is important to present objective, statistical information in keeping with the patient’s clinical profile, although the power of such information to counter bias introduced by patient-to-patient encounters remains uncertain. A postsurgery ‘‘buddy system’’ between candidates and narrators is relatively free of bias concerns because the treatment decision was made previously and may facilitate postsurgery coping and adjustment. Our case and available evidence highlight the benefits and potential hazards of patient-to-patient encounters, hence our call for reflective, consistent practices.
