Superconducting Wire and Cable for the SSC - Progress at Intermagnetics General Corporation Towards Production

1989
The requirements of the SSC are examined from the point of view of a wire and cable manufacturer. The present status of the conductor development at IGC is described. Since the SSC will require a large volume production at the most economical price, billets measuring 12″ in diameter have been used for prototype wire production. Both inner and outer grades of wire have been processed with NbTi filament diameters of 5 to 9 μm. Considerations of the production scale up that will have to be made to meet the demands of the SSC, are also discussed.
