UNDERSTANDING TRAVELLER REACTIONS TO ATT (ADVANCED TRANSPORT TELEMATICS) THROUGH 'INSIGHT'

Improved survey techniques are required to examine traveller needs for information, and how the provision of information of various kinds may affect travel behaviour. As part of the ROMANSE project in Southampton, being coordinated by Hampshire County Council, a computer-based survey technique called INSIGHT is being developed to examine traveller reactions to a range of new information systems being installed in the city, both singly and collectively. These systems provide information in-home, at local bus stops and for drivers at the roadside. INSIGHT demonstrates six new information systems to respondents, who are invited to use the information as they make journeys on the computer by car or by bus from their home to the city centre. The aim of the exercise is to establish how travellers use and value information, and what effect it has on their travel behaviour. The technique combines computer simulation and stated preference methodologies, and has considerable potential to assist in the development of strategies for in-home, bus stop and roadside information provision.
