IN VITRO ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY AND PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF LEAF EXTRACTS OF ADHATODA VASICA AND CROTOLARIA VERRUCOSA

The extract of many plants used in traditional medicine contain a wide range of curative agents that are used in many modern medicines. The herbal medicine is the basis of primary health because of its cultural acceptability with the lesser side effects. Therefore, there is a need for us to search alternative, naturally available remedies for curing millions of people worldwide. In the present investigation phytochemical analysis and in vitro antibacterial activities of the nbutanolic leaf extracts of Adhatoda vasica and Crotolaria verrucosa, having medicinal uses collected from the Kadapa district were tested. The phytochemical studies of the leaf extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides and diterpenes in all plants. The leaf extracts of Adhatoda vasica and Crotolaria verrucosa were subjected for screening of in vitro antibacterial activity against selected major human pathogenic bacterial strains like Bacillus substilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by agar well diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity revealed that the Adhatoda vasica and Crotolaria verrucosa leaf extracts showed better activity on the selected bacterial strains.
