A process for preparing symmetrical and unsymmetrical carbonates

The invention relates to a method for preparing symmetrical and asymmetrical carbonates of the general formula (I) by reacting alcohols of the general formula (II) and alkyl or aryl halides of the general formula (III) with carbon dioxide and cesium carbonate at ambient temperature in dipolar aprotic solvents.
