Ceramic‐Based Coatings on Metals Bonded by High Intensity Infrared Heating

2008
Wear and corrosion resistant coatings onto metal parts are of interest for improving performance. Slurries of WC or TiC with Ni, Ni 3 Al or Co-based binders were applied onto substrates of cast iron, alloy steel, or tool steel. The coatings were bonded to the substrates using high intensity infrared (IR) heating. The coatings were well-bonded with some chemical interaction with the base metal evident. Improved hardnesses were observed which were found to be a function of the substrate composition and distance from the surface. Initial wear testing showed improved performance for the IR bonded coatings and especially for ones using Ni 3 Al as the binder phase.
