Caracterización de las pacientes operadas por cáncer de mama en el Hospital General Docente Orlando Pantoja Tamayo, enero 2016-diciembre 2018

Introduction:  breast cancer is a disease of considerable magnitude and constitutes one of the main public health problems in the world.  Objective:  to characterize clinically-epidemiologically the patients operated on for breast cancer at the Orlando Pantoja Tamayo General Teaching Hospital.  Method:  a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to characterize the patients operated on for breast cancer at the Orlando Pantoja Tamayo General Hospital in Contramaestre municipality from January 2016 to December 2018.  Results:  The current age group ranged from 50 to 59 years. Among the risk factors, early menarche was at the top with 29 cases for 26% of all cases. Breast health history prevailed, with 52% of all cases studied. The histological variety of infiltrating ductal carcinoma was the most common entity with 73 patients for 67%, while the most used surgical procedure according to the clinical stage of the patients was Madden's mastectomy. Conclusions: breast cancer appeared mainly in postmenopausal women after the fifth decade of life, with a history of fibrocystic disease and as a risk, early menarche together with a family history of breast cancer. Infiltrating ductal carcinoma was found to be the predominant histological type; stages IIa and IIb were the most common ones, and the most frequently used surgical procedure was Madden's modified radical mastectomy.
