Exploring Use of KU-Band Scatterometer Data from SCATSAT-1 for Crop Monitoring in India, a Case Study for Jute Crop

2021
This paper describes the use Ku-band scatterometer data from SCATSAT-1 for jute yield estimation in India. The study was carried out using super resolved daily backscatter data from both polarization (HH and VV) at 2 km spatial resolution. Jute planting date was derived using the time series backscatter data in VV polarization. Statistical models were developed for estimating jute fibre yield of two major jute growing states of India (West Bengal and Assam) using reported yield and the ratio of back scatter coefficient in HH and VV polarization. The present study has shown the possibility of using backscatter from Ku-band for deriving planting date of jute as well as for estimating jute fibre yield at district and state level (with r2 of 0.94 and 084 in West Bengal and Assam, respectively) one month prior to the harvest. However, the models need to be validated over other independent year data for better precision.
