The authors do a literature review approaching basic concepts on xerostomia and try to investigate the effectiveness and safety of salivary stimulation by chewing gum. Evidences indicate that, up to now, there are no scientific basis to prove the persistent effect of this method and that more clinical studies are needed to clarify the issue.
