Recently, the number of underground cavities have been rapidly increasing in urban areas. As a result of this, we need to perform a preemptive approach to evaluate the risk potential of railroads with respect to underground cavities based on a hazard map. In general, railroad is divided into earthwork, tunnels, sand bridges sections. In this study, an attempt was made to evaluate the impact of underground cavities for each geometric condition on the basis of numerical analysis. The results reveal that the earthwork section yields a higher risk level than tunnel and bridge sections when the underground cavity exists. In addition, the influential zone due to the presence of 3-meter diameter underground cavity was found to be 20 meter in a lateral direction and 8 meter in a vertical direction with respect to the center of track structure in earthwork sections. Consequently, the findings of this study will be taken into account for establishing a hazard map.
