The central purpose of this article focuses on establishing the importance of personnel selection within the development of human management policies in Colombian SMEs. The study presents a qualitative analysis, based on obtaining secondary source data. In the development of the theoretical framework, it is interpreted that human management is part of the business strategy, not only because of the role it plays in the implementation of the organizational strategy, but also, as a source of sustainable competitive advantage. In the discussion, it is established that the condition that the technical occupation criterion prevails in the selection of personnel and the weak assessment that there is about human talent in SMEs, specifically, in terms of their skills and technical skills and / or professionals, is a perception contrary to the vision of the strategic direction of any business, and in which, a conception that is completely disjointed with the purpose of organizational growth and to give greater importance to the development of human management is denoted, achieving that Such a recruitment process contributes with greater force to the achievement of the missionary goals of the companies. It is concluded that from the theoretical perspective and based on the empirical findings obtained, it is highlighted that the policies for the development of human management (selection, retention and qualification of human talent) are actions that allow SMEs to exceed the higher competitors and get to occupy significant positions in the sectors in which they develop.
