EFFECT OF SOLANUM AMERICANUM EXTRACTS ON FERTILITY IN MALE ALBINO RATS

2014
Utilization of resources by human beings on the earth is increasing day to day. But the available resources are not sufficient to the people due to the population exploitation. Controlling the birth rate in these days has become a major problem. The medicine and surgeries are unable to control the population growth. Since, there is a need of right medicine and technique to solve these problems. The present study is to find out the effect of medicinal plant Solanum americanum leaf extracts on fertility in male albino rats. The plant extracts were prepared through maceration technique with the solvents acetone and ethanol. The male albino rats were divided into three groups of eight animals in each. First group was considered as control and Group-II and group-III were treated with ethanol and acetone extracts orally with the dose 200mg/kg respectively for 21 days. On 22 nd day the blood samples were collected and serological parameters were performed. The cauda epididymis was finely teased in 20ml of normal saline to calculate the sperm count and observe the motility and morphological changes if any. Estimation of glycogen and protein in the testis and liver were also carried out. Decreased sperm count and motility in the treated groups indicate the antifertility activity of the plant extracts. The decreased levels of glycogen, protein in the testis and liver also observed in the treated groups. The increased levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides in the treated groups also supporting the effect of plant extract on fertility. The ethanol extract showed more effect on fertility than to the acetone extract.
