Loss of Iberian island tenebrionid beetles and conservation management recommendations

2002
Tenebrionid beetles of the eastern Iberian Mediterranean islands (Illa Grossa, Nueva Tabarca and Benidorm Island) were studied with pitfall trapping and hand collection. Tenebrionidae are an important group in the structure and functioning of these insular ecosystems. The results of this study show great differences in composition of species between islands (eleven species were found on Illa Grossa, ten on Nueva Tabarca and four on the Island of Benidorm). In comparison with previous studies, there has been a decrease in the number of species of tenebrionid beetles on these islands (one species extirpated on Illa Grossa and six on Nueva Tabarca). This loss of species is a result of environmental degradation (human impact through urban activities, introduction of alien species and mass tourism). Vulnerability of Mediterranean islands to loss of biodiversity is apparent. Measures for preservation of the present insular faunas are being taken, and other management plans should also be established.
