Prevalence of Cysticercosis in Pigs and Economic Losses due to Condemnation of Pork

The prevalence of cysticercosis in pigs and estimation of economic losses due to condemnation of pork was carried out in organized slaughterhouse in Mumbai. Prevalence of cysticercosis was found to be 0.89% with one carcass (0.11%) showing less than 5 cysts and seven carcasses (0.78%) showing more than 5 cysts. Maximum positive cases were noticed from Jalgaon followed by Surat as well as Dhule. Higher incidence of cysticercosis was noticed carcasses of female animals (0.55%) as compared to male animals (0.33%). Total economic losses due to complete or partial condemnation were estimated.
