Josep Fontana defined the teaching received from Pierre Vilar as alive and present, a teaching «which is defi ned by the shared objectives», in a clear allusion to his Marxism. Based on this defi nition, the author, from some letters exchanged in 1974 around Febvre, highlights the sincerity and the intellectual complicity as pivotal elements of the long and solid relationship forged between both historians and acknowledges and appreciates, from her personal testimony, the presence of both aspects in the way Josep Fontana used to teach.
