Recovery from Light-Desensitization in Toad Rods

The visual system of vertebrates possesses a remarkable property whereby a fairly good discrimination of light changes occurs over a wide range of ambient intensities (about 8 log units). Much of this adaptability is attributed to the existance within the same retina of two receptor types (rods and cones) with distinct functional properties and sensitivities (see Gouras, 1972).
