FDTD Analysis of Radiation and Reflection of Electromagnetic Fields in Finite Length Microstrip Lines with Terminal Cross-Section

The electromagnetic field problems of finite length microstrip lines with terminal cross-section are difficult to solve analytically. In this paper, we report the results of our investigation on reflection and radiation characteristics at the terminal cross-section of finite mictrostrip lines through numerical simulations using Laplace equation and Maxwell's equations. We investigated the transient characteristics of conversion from quasi TEM guided waves to radiation fields using three dimensional FDTD analysis. Electric field conversions at the terminal parts of finite strip line are particularly discussed for field conversion from guided surface waves with skin depths to radiation field. This analysis results are expected contribute to the effective design of antenna devices.
