ICP and EEG in Various Forms of Cerebral Seizures

1980
Cerebral seizures lead to an increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF). The increased blood flow is brought about by vascular dilatation created by a reduced pH due to raised CO2 and increased lactate(l). It can also be observed when clinical convulsions are avoided by controlled respiration and blood pressure crises are suppressed (I). A direct stimulation of the vessels by paroxysmal discharge is also thought to be possible. Both the increase of CBF and also edema (possibly caused by a disturbance of the blood brain barrier (2), lead to a rise in intracranial pressure (ICP). This can have potentially fatal consequences.
