Att lära hur man lär sig. En studie om övningsinstruktioner inom instrumentalundervisning på musik- och kulturskolor.

2010
Title: To teach how to learn – A study of practice instructions in the field of music education. The purpose of this study is to examine how instructions concerning practicing a musical instrument are conveyed during a lesson. The content of the instructions and the way they were presented during the lesson were examined, as well as the student's perception of these instructions. The study was conducted in Swedish schools of music. The participating teachers had cello as their main instrument. Twelve lessons were examined, six of which were conducted in groups. The students were aged between ten to eighteen years. The results of this study show that both teachers and students focused on what is to be practiced but not on how it is to be practiced. The lessons consisted mainly of applications of different practice strategies. However, the usage of these strategies during practice was not mentioned by the students. The majority of the written and verbal instructions contained information concerning what is to be practiced. Based on the results of this study the consequences for music education are discussed, as are implications for further research.
