Flashover Fault Localization for Gas Insulated Line Based on Steep Wave Sensing

2020
Gas insulated transmission line (GIL) is a kind of compact transmission line with a large number of insulators. Defects during manufacturing and installation may cause flashover of GIL insulators during operation. In order to improve the localization accuracy of long-distance GIL flashover fault and reduce the cost, a GIL flashover fault localization method based on steep wave sensors was proposed. Two wide-band steep wave sensors were used at both ends of the GIL to measure the flashover discharge waveforms. The waveform data were acquired by data acquisition units and transmitted through optical fibers. The system used a time of flight algorithm to locate the discharge faults. In addition, the factors affecting the accuracy of fault localization were analyzed and the fault localization tests were carried out. Experimental results showed that the proposed method can meet the requirement of GIL flashover fault localization.
