HUBUNGAN KEPADATAN TUMOR-ASSOCIATED NEUTROPHILS (TANs) DENGAN KARAKTERISTIK HISTOPATOLOGI ADENOKARSINOMA KOLOREKTAL

Background: Colorectal adenocarcinoma is a malignant tumor in the epithelium of the colon with glandular or mucinus differentiation. Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 9,2% of the death. Tumor-Associated Neutrophils (TANs), which are the components of the tumor microenvironment, are known to be prognostic determinants in colorectal cancer patients. This study aims to determine the correlation between TANs density and the histopathology characteristics of colorectal adenocarcinoma in the Department of Anatomical Pathology of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang for the period Janury 2019-October 2020. Methods: This is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design. A total of 51 HE stained slides diagnosed as adenocarcinoma colorectal were observed under the microscope and mean of neutrophils were counted from five areas with highest neutrophils density. The determination of the benchmark value is obtained from the median of the neutrophil mean which are then grouped into two categories, namely high density and low density. Results: From 51 samples, most of the patients were adenocarcinoma NOS subtype (80%), with a low degree of differentiation (62.7%), TNM stage, T3 (52.9%), N0 (43.1%) and M0 ( 90.2%). In this study, lymphatic invasion (52.9%), vascular invasion (22.6%), perineural invasion (74.5%) and low tumor budding (74.5%). The density of TANs was mostly found at low density (51%) and there was no correlation between TANs’ density and histopathological characteristics of histopathological subtypes, degrees of differentiation, TNM staging, perineural, lymphatic or vascular invasion (p> 0.050). Conclusion: Statistically, bivariate analysis showed that neutrophil density had no correlation with the histopathology characteristics of colorectal adenocarcinoma.
