The mental health of LGBTIQA+ young people

This chapter provides a summary of the mental health of young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual and of other diverse sexual, gender and bodily identities (LGBTIQA+). First, the terminology is clarified. A description of the mental health difficulties faced by LGBTIQA+ young people follows, as well as an exploration of the risk factors for poor mental health in this population. The chapter includes a description of LGBTIQA+ young people’s experiences with health services and how mental health can be improved. Finally, the chapter concludes with a consideration of intersectionality and future directions.
