INFLUENCE OF WORK ENVIRONMENT ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF SKILLED CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN NIGERIA

Declining productivity of skilled workers as been a subject of debate in construction projects. Work environment has been identified as a means of improving productivity. This paper assessed the influence of work environment on the productivity of skilled construction workers in Nigeria. The survey approach was adopted. A structured questionnaire was administered to skilled workers on permanent employment in construction firms. A total number of 358 questionnaires was administered and 179 were retrieved. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS. The findings show that work conditions ranked the highest work environment factor with a grand mean of 4.06, goal setting ranked the highest productivity factor with a grand mean of 4.08. The result of the inferential statistics confirms a positive relationship between work environment and productivity. The results of this study show that improved work environment will improve the productivity of employees. The study recommends that Employers should provide skilled workers with a conducive working environment to boost their productivity.
