Formation anisotropy determination while drilling, with tilted magnetic dipole antennas

2003
Systems and method for determining an anisotropy parameter of a subsurface formation comprise disposing subsurface an elongated support while drilling a borehole through the formation, transmitting em energy into the formation from a plurality of transmitter antennas (T1, T2) disposed on the support, at least one of the antennas being tilted or transverse, detecting em signals with a pair of tilted receiver antennas (R1, R2) disposed on the support, wherein the at least one tilted transmitter antenna or one of tilted receiver antennas is disposed with its respective magnetic moment at 90 degrees to the support axis. Processor means combine detected signals from the tilted antennas and axial antennas to compensate for receiver antenna mismatch to determine the anisotropy. Model based inversion may be used for anisotropy determination in the presence of invasion and shoulder bed effects.
