The physical layers of wireless sensor networks, such as ZigBee usually use RF modules of the 2.4GHz ISM band. However, the RF modules of the 2.4GHz band does not guarantee reliable wireless communication links because of interactions of wireless devices at the ISM band and weak penetration properties in the building environment. In this paper, we introduce designs of 424/447MHz band wireless module and evaluation board for the physical layer of the building wireless sensor networks. We experimentally evaluate the performance of the 424/447MHz RF module for building environments as well as a line of sight environment and compare the performances with the RF modules of 2.4GHz.
