The notion of an implied license, which may furnish a way for peripheral manufacturers to get around patent protection of busses, is discussed. Implied licenses exist whenever a patent owner sells part of a patented combination where the part sold has no practical use except in the patented combination. Limitations on implied licenses are described, and the extension of implied licenses are considered. >
