Effective Electromagnetic Shielding over an ultra-wide bandwidth using a Frequency Selective Surface

2013
A Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) that behaves as a shield over an ultra-wide band (UWB) is presented. It is composed of cross-dipoles and rings and these two elements are printed on the two surfaces of a single dielectric slab. The numerical investigations demonstrate a shielding bandwidth of 74% from 6.5 GHz to 14 GHz with at least 20dB attenuation. The FSS also has a nearly linearly decreasing phase response in this band. The transmission and reflection performances in the frequency domain result in improving the Effective Electromagnetic Shielding (EES). The structure is suitable for providing necessary shielding for radiation from license-free UWB and other radio sources which produce interference that for example can cause malfunction to equipment in sensitive environments.
