A study of some socio-demographic characteristics of human sterilization cases in the area covered by Rural Health Training Centre, Harsola, Indore.

The interview method was used to collect socio-demographic characteristics of the cases who have undergone vasectomy and tubectomy operations since 1969-1973 in the area covered by the Rural Health Training Center Harsola Indore India. 260 vasectomy and 240 tubectomy acceptors were interviewed. The maximum number of vasectomy cases were in the 35-39 year age group (31.15%) and between 30-34 year age group (26.29%). The maximum number of tubectomy cases were in the 30-34 year age group (41.67%) and between 25-29 years (29.70%). Age at the time of marriage in the majority of vasectomy cases were 15-19 years (51.15%) and between 20-24 years (33.85%). In the majority of tubectomy cases the age at marriage was 15-19 years (48.35%) and between 20-24 (8.33%). The majority of the vasectomized cases were laborer (35.77%) followed by agricultural workers (30.77%) service class (22.69%) and businessmen (6.92%) with 3.85% of the cases without an occupation. Among the tubectomized cases the majority were laborers (39.58%) followed by agriculture workers (35.83%) housewife (19.59%) and service class (3.75%). About 50% of the cases had 3-4 children while 10.40% of cases had more than 7 children. 63.83% of vasectomy cases and 60.41% of the tubectomy cases were motivated by the paramedical staff of the Center. The most common reason for undergoing the operation was poverty (46.20%).
