Large Satellite Image accessibility and manipulation during remote sensing and digital image analysis 'A case study'

2005
An increase in the Image processing software has become of a great demand for too many applications. Among those applications we can mention remote sensing, ultrasound images, meteorology, astronomy, pattern recognition, etc. Those applications could be done now easily using Computer graphics. Computer graphics is concerned with producing images and animations (sequences of images) using a computer. This is certainly, will includes hardware problems arises from dealing with a huge number of data used to make these images and because of the limited capacity of hardware (hard disks, RAMS, VGA cards) during processing these types of applications. The motivation beyond this paper arises mainly to us during a project needs the processing of a relatively large image of Cairo using Erdase Imagin image processing software. Some operations are limited by disk speed, others by the capacity (size) of the RAM, and by CPU speed. No solution up to our knowledge, were found to deal with this satellite image as a whole or by splitting it into some smaller digital images in any other software except Matlab. This paper will mainly discuss how a very simple Matlab based program solves the problem of processing large size digital satellite image difficult to be accessed with limited capacity computers.
