EVACUATION OF RAILWAY TUNNELS

2004
In the light of some of the most disastrous fire incidents within road and rail tunnel networks, tunnel designers have been addressing a myriad of safety features intended to reduce the risks of these events occurring. In certain instances, retrofits are being instigated to deal with new developments in tunnel safety design, especially with regard to the evacuation of the tunnel occupants. This paper takes a close look at the design of railway tunnels and the guidance provided within the existing standards. In particular, design features for egress are scrutinized more closely, such as the walkways and their widths required to complete the evacuation. Another important consideration is the mobility impaired. (A)
