Chapter 3 – Two Faces of Explosion: Deflagration and Detonation

2015
This chapter initially explains and defines the term “explosion,” which has two different faces—deflagration and detonation. It also shows the difference between and the importance of linear burning and mass burning and their bearing on the phenomenon of deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) and explosives safety. The formation of a shock wave is schematically explained. Available theoretical methods for the prediction of detonation velocity and detonation pressure of explosives is briefly explained.
